Early Years Milan

THE EARLY YEARS The ISM Early Years section caters for children from two and a half to five years of age. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) begins in Kindergarten for students aged 3 to 11. This focuses on the development of the whole child, in the classroom but also in the world outside and through other environments where children learn. It offers a framework that meets children's several needs: academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural. Classes are taught in English and are divided into three stages: Pre-Kindergarten (rising 3 years), Kindergarten (3 to 4 years) and Transition (4 to 5 years). Class teachers are fully qualified and they are supported by experienced assistants. As well as being large, brightly coloured, and well equipped, the classrooms are designed to be stimulating learning environments for the children.   There is a big activity room for gymnastics and music, and a well stocked library which forms part of the school’s multi-media research area. The dining room on the lower floor has a large well lit area reserved for the use of the Early Years section. All food is cooked on-site in the kitchens. In the playground there is a well equipped outdoor area with an all-weather surface.THE EARLY YEARS CURRICULUM The PYP is a programme that has been devised specifically for young students in international schools. It works through a pedagogical approach of inquiry that stresses the participation of children in the management of their own learning through encouraging them to be inquisitive about the world around them and helping them to develop tools and strategies for finding answers to the questions that they themselves pose. In the Early Years Section the children work with their class teacher and assistant throughout the whole day, giving consistency and security in all activities. The school day runs from 8.50 to 15.20 (five days a week). Our youngest children in Pre K and Kg sleep for around an hour after lunch each day. During the week, all children take part in 2 music lessons and 1 physical education lesson. They also visit the library where they can choose a book to share at home. Children also play outside every day. The wide range of classroom based activities is designed to stimulate the children’s natural curiosity and to present them with new challenges in all areas of the curriculum.
